FAQ
Common Questions
No. Most teachers in India don't have it — homeschooling is still new here. You need strong subject knowledge and the ability to connect with a child. HomeLearn provides NIOS-aligned syllabus guides and a teacher guide to help you get started.
Where can I find a NIOS tutor in India?
HomeLearn connects homeschooling families with verified NIOS tutors across India. Search by subject and grade — Maths, Science, English, Hindi, and more — and find a teacher who comes to your home. Every teacher is verified before their profile goes live.
How do I find a home tutor near me for homeschooling?
On HomeLearn, search by your city, subject, and grade to find verified homeschool teachers near you. Teachers come to your home — no commute needed. We currently cover Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.
Is homeschooling legal in India?
Yes. There is no law in India that prohibits homeschooling. The Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009 mandates education for children aged 6–14 but does not require it to happen in a school. Many families register with NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) so their child can appear for Class 10 and 12 board exams.
Can my homeschooled child appear for board exams?
Yes. Most homeschooling families in India register with NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) or opt for IGCSE/Cambridge. NIOS is government-recognised, accepted by UGC, and allows students to appear for Class 10 and 12 board exams. Teachers on HomeLearn can help prepare your child for these boards.
Is HomeLearn free for parents?
Yes — parents pay zero platform fees. You only pay the teacher's fee directly. Teachers set their own rates, which typically range from ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 per month depending on the subject, grade, and experience level.
How are teachers verified?
Every teacher submits their government ID, passing certificate, and experience certificate. Our team manually verifies these documents before the teacher's profile goes live. Only verified teachers appear in search results.
Can I try a class before committing?
Some teachers offer a free or low-cost introductory session. Check the teacher's profile for details, or enroll in a single class first to try before continuing.
Which payment methods are supported?
UPI, debit/credit cards, and net banking via Razorpay. All payments are secured by Razorpay.
Can my child enroll with more than one teacher?
Yes, your child can be enrolled across different subjects and teachers at the same time.
What subjects are available?
Maths, Science, English, Hindi, Social Studies, Coding, Art, Music, and more. Use the subject filter on Discover to find what you need.
Does HomeLearn align with NEP 2020?
The National Education Policy 2020 emphasises flexible, multidisciplinary, and learner-paced education — which is exactly what homeschooling offers. HomeLearn helps you find teachers who support this approach across subjects and grades.
What happens if a teacher stops showing up?
If a teacher cancels or stops taking classes, HomeLearn issues HomeLearn Credits for all unused classes — equal to the fee paid minus classes already completed. Credits never expire and can be used to enroll with any other teacher on the platform immediately. If you prefer a cash refund, you can request one and we will process it within 3 business days, subject to gateway deduction charges.
Is my child's data safe?
We follow strict data protection practices. Children's data is managed through the parent account only. See our Privacy Policy.
Do I need homeschool teaching experience?
No. Most teachers in India don't have it — homeschooling is still new here. You need strong subject knowledge and the ability to connect with a child. HomeLearn provides NIOS-aligned syllabus guides and a teacher guide to help you get started.
What curriculum do I follow?
Most homeschool families follow NIOS (Class 10 and 12) or NCERT (Class 1–9). Some follow IGCSE. The parent will tell you which board their child is registered with. If you can teach CBSE, you can teach NIOS — the content is very similar.
Is there any upfront or monthly cost?
No. Creating an account, setting up your profile, and creating classes is completely free. There is no monthly subscription and no joining fee. A small platform fee is deducted from online payments to cover payment processing and platform costs.
How long does verification take?
Usually 1–3 business days after you submit your government ID, passing certificate, and experience certificate.
How many hours per week do homeschool teachers typically work?
It depends on how many students you take on. You set your own schedule and availability — some teachers do 5 hours a week, others do 20. It's entirely up to you.
What if the parent and I disagree on the teaching approach?
Homeschool parents are deeply involved — that's normal. Discuss expectations upfront: what curriculum to follow, how fast to move, and how to communicate. If there's a mismatch, it's better to address it early. HomeLearn's messaging system helps keep communication clear.
Is it safe to go to a stranger's home?
We understand this concern, especially for women teachers. All parents on HomeLearn are registered with verified contact details. You can also choose to teach online instead of in-person. If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can stop and contact our team.
Can I accept cash payments?
Yes. HomeLearn supports both online (Razorpay) and manual cash payment recording.
Are there any limits on classes or students?
No limits. You can create as many classes and enroll as many students as you need.
How do I receive my earnings?
You can request a payout for any class you have already completed. Earnings are held for 7 days after each class to allow parents to raise disputes — after that window, the amount is released and transferred to your registered UPI ID within 1–2 business days. Any undisputed balance at the end of the month is released automatically.
