Board Exams

Which board should your homeschooled child register with?

Homeschooled children in India can appear for board exams through several pathways. Each board has different eligibility, fees, and recognition. Here's a quick comparison — click any board for the full enrollment guide.

Choosing the right board is the first step in planning your homeschool curriculum in India. Most families start with NIOS for Class 10 and 12, since it is government-recognised, affordable, and designed for learners outside the traditional school system. Once you know which board your child will register with, a homeschool teacher on HomeLearn can align their lessons to that curriculum and help your child prepare for board exams at their own pace.

For Class 1–9: There is no board exam requirement. Most homeschooling families follow NCERT textbooks — the same curriculum used in CBSE schools — as the foundation for these years. Learning at home during this phase is fully flexible; the parent and teacher decide the pace and depth together.

For Class 10 and 12: Your child needs to register with a recognised board to sit board exams and obtain a certificate accepted by colleges and universities. NIOS is the most popular choice — it was designed specifically for open and distance learners, including homeschoolers. IGCSE is preferred by families planning higher education abroad. CBSE private candidate is restricted to specific categories and is not open to fresh homeschoolers.

State Open Boards like KSOS, MPSOS, and RSOS are an alternative to NIOS for families who prefer state-level recognition or whose state has a well-established open school system.
