State Open School Boards

Several Indian states run their own open school boards. These work similarly to NIOS but follow state curriculum and offer state-level recognition.

When to use a state open board

For most homeschoolers, NIOS is the better choice because it offers national recognition. State open boards are useful when:

  • You specifically want a state board certificate (some state government jobs prefer state board qualifications)
  • Your child plans to attend a state university that has specific state board requirements
  • NIOS registration is closed and the state board has an open admission window
  • You want to follow the state curriculum rather than NCERT/NIOS curriculum

How enrollment typically works

The process is similar across most state open boards:

1

Visit the board's official website

Each state board has its own portal. Check the table above for links.

2

Check admission window

State boards typically have 1–2 admission windows per year. Dates vary by state.

3

Fill the online application

Enter personal details, choose subjects (minimum 5), and upload documents — age proof, photo, previous marksheet if applicable.

4

Pay the fee

Usually ₹500–₹2,000 depending on the state. Payment online or at designated centres.

5

Appear for exams

Exams are held once or twice a year depending on the state. Check your board's schedule.
