CBSE Private Candidate

CBSE allows private candidates for board exams — but with strict eligibility restrictions that exclude most homeschooled children.

Important

CBSE does not allow fresh homeschooled students to appear as private candidates. You must fall into one of the specific eligible categories listed below. For most homeschooling families, NIOS is the correct choice.

Who is eligible?

CBSE private candidate registration is only open to:

  • Failed or compartment students

Students who previously appeared for CBSE Class 10 or 12 and failed or got compartment in one or more subjects.

  • Improvement candidates

Students who passed CBSE exams but want to improve their marks. Must appear within the next two consecutive years.

  • Women candidates (Class 12 only)

Women who are bonafide residents of Delhi and have passed Class 10 at least two years before appearing for Class 12.

  • Physically handicapped students

Students with physical disabilities who are unable to attend a regular school.

  • Teachers serving in CBSE schools (Class 12 only)

Teachers currently employed in CBSE-affiliated schools who want to appear for Class 12.

Why NIOS is better for most homeschoolers

If you're homeschooling your child and they haven't previously been enrolled in a CBSE school, CBSE private candidate is not an option. Even if you are eligible, NIOS offers several advantages:

  • No eligibility restrictions — any homeschooler can register
  • Two exam windows per year (vs one for CBSE)
  • On-demand examination option
  • Subjects can be attempted individually and retaken
  • Same recognition — UGC, JEE, NEET, all colleges
  • Specifically designed for students learning outside schools
