The default board for homeschooled children in India. Government-run, nationally recognized, and the most affordable option.
What is NIOS?
NIOS is a government board under the Ministry of Education. It is the world's largest open schooling system with over 4 million cumulative learners. It was specifically created for students learning outside traditional schools — including homeschoolers, dropouts, and working adults.
Recognition
- Recognized by UGC (University Grants Commission)
- Accepted by all Indian universities for admissions
- Eligible for JEE, NEET, CLAT, UPSC, NDA, SSC, and all competitive exams
- Certificate is equivalent to CBSE and ICSE
- Member of COBSE (Council of Boards of School Education in India)
What exams does NIOS offer?
Secondary (Class 10)
Minimum age: 14 years. No upper age limit.
Senior Secondary (Class 12)
Minimum age: 15 years. Must have passed Class 10 or equivalent.
NIOS also offers Open Basic Education (OBE) for younger learners — equivalent to Class 3, 5, and 8. No formal exam required before Class 10.
How to register
Visit nios.ac.in
Go to the official NIOS website and click on 'Admission' or 'Online Admission'.
Choose your level
Select Secondary (Class 10) or Senior Secondary (Class 12).
Fill the application form
Enter personal details, choose your subjects (minimum 5, at least 1 language), and upload documents.
Upload documents
Age proof (birth certificate or Aadhaar), passport-size photo, previous marksheet (for Class 12), and signature.
Pay the fee
₹1,800 for Secondary, ₹2,100 for Senior Secondary (approximate — check nios.ac.in for current fees). Payment via net banking, UPI, or debit/credit card.
Get your enrollment number
After successful registration, you receive an enrollment number. Use this for all future correspondence and exam registration.
Subjects
Students must choose a minimum of 5 subjects with at least 1 language. Subjects are grouped into:
- •Group A (Languages): Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Bengali, Tamil, and more
- •Group B (Sciences): Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- •Group C (Social Sciences): History, Geography, Political Science, Economics
- •Group D (Vocational): Data Entry, Tourism, Business Studies, Home Science
Exam schedule
Subjects can be attempted individually. Failed subjects can be retaken in the next session without re-registering. NIOS also offers On-Demand Examination (ODE) where students can appear for exams when they feel ready.
