American High School Diploma for Homeschoolers in India
A flexible, fully-online, credit-based route — a strong fit for families planning university in the US.
Two routes — don't confuse them
1. Accredited online High School Diploma
The full, "real" US diploma. The child enrolls in a US-accredited online school and completes a credit-based transcript (~21–24 credits) across grades 9–12, graduating with a diploma + transcript. This is the credential universities prefer.
2. GED (General Educational Development)
A high-school-equivalencycertificate earned by passing 4 exams (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts). It's a faster, cheaper fallback — not a diploma — and some selective universities view it less favourably.
Accreditation is everything
An unaccredited"online diploma" is worthless for university admission. Only enroll in a school with recognised accreditation — Cognia(formerly AdvancED), MSA-CESS, NCPSA, or US regional accreditation. Verify it on the school's site and the accreditor's directory before paying.
Recognition
- USA: an accredited diploma is accepted by US colleges, employers and the military; credits transfer cleanly
- For competitive US admissions, pair it with SAT/ACT and ideally AP (Advanced Placement) courses
- India: usually needs an AIU equivalence certificate — AIU may require AP exams / SAT to treat it as Class-12-equivalent
- UK / Australia: a standalone US diploma is sometimes below their entry bar and may need AP exams or a foundation year — check the target university
How to enroll
Choose an accredited online school

Verify the accreditation
Confirm the accreditor (Cognia / MSA / regional) on both the school's site and the accreditor's own directory. Do not skip this step.
Enroll & transfer credits
Register, and transfer any prior high-school credits your child has already earned.
Complete the credits online
Work through the required ~21–24 credits (core subjects + electives) across grades 9–12, at a flexible, rolling pace.
Graduate with diploma + transcript
Receive the official American High School Diploma and transcript, recognised for university applications.
Prefer the GED route? Register at ged.com ↗ and book the 4 subject tests at an authorised test centre (available in India).
Subjects & how to choose
The diploma is credit-based (~24 credits): core English, Math, Science and Social Studies, plus electives and often a foreign language, arts and PE. Students can take AP courses to strengthen applications and earn college credit. Lock the core credits first, then choose electives and APs aligned to the intended major and target country (add SAT/ACT for the US; AP exams for UK/Australia credibility).
Exams & fees
- •No single national board exam — progression is continuous and course-based, so you enroll and finish credits on a rolling basis
- •AP exams are held once a year (May); the GED can be booked year-round
- •Accredited online-school tuition commonly runs $1,000–$5,000+ per year (₹ lakhs over four years)
- •The GED is cheap — roughly $30–40 per subject
Is it right for your family?
A great fit if you're aiming at US universities and want maximum flexibility. If your plan is Indian universities or a low-cost route, NIOS is usually better; for UK/Commonwealth plans, IGCSE (with A Levels) tends to have less friction.
